Maryland One of Most INEFFICIENT States in Stimulus Spending

By Martin Watcher

I know that it has been a while since I’ve done some original reporting, but I think this one is definitely worth it and somebody needs to expose that Governor Martin O’Malley has created less jobs with his stimulus money than almost any other State.

Vice-President Joe Biden held a huge press conference with Governor Martin O’Malley and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to tout the stimulus.

The O’Malley Fan Club over at the Baltimore Sun reported the press conference in the following way:
Biden singled out Maryland as he pointed to improving economic conditions around the country.

“Governor O’Malley has even a better story, what’s happening in his state, in terms of employment,” Biden said, throwing in praise for the governor’s stimulus-reporting Web site.

But what Vice-President Biden and the Baltimore Sun, or anybody else in the main stream media, failed to do, was actually look at how many jobs Maryland created under Martin O’Malley managing the stimulus dollars than other states. Yes, when you compare the cost per job created or saved, Maryland ranks toward the very bottom of the list.

According to the President’s “Recovery.gov” web site, Maryland created or saved 6,748 jobs with the $685 million actually spent to the state, with a per job cost of $101,000 (mind you we’re using actual spent dollars, not awarded, if that were the case it would be $471,000 per job). Compare that to Virginia which created jobs for nearly half the cost, with an average cost of $56,000 per job created/saved. Or how about our neighbor to the North, with Pennsylvania spending $57,000 per job created/saved. Joe Biden was probably so excited by O’Malley because his home state of Delaware was closer to Maryland with a cost of $75,000 per job created/saved. Washington D.C. though came the closest in the region though, with $91,000 per job created/saved and West Virginia coming in close with $99,000 per job created/saved. Yes, in the Mid-Atlantic Region, Maryland was the most expensive per job created/saved with stimulus funds.

But what about one of those other States that has a really high unemployment rate? California was saving jobs for $74,000 a job, Texas was at $93,000, New Jersey – $39,000 and New York was at $31,000 a job created/saved.

You know how Martin O’Malley keeps saying we’re going to do so well because of the education of our workforce? Obviously it’s not helping if we’re down there with Alabama, Mississippi and North Dakota. When West Virginia, which has half the population of people with Bachelor’s degrees as Maryland does, is spending their money more efficiently, we have to wonder. Here is Maryland, the wealthiest state in the nation…blah blah blah… falling down in the ranks of 48 out of 51 when it comes to efficiency of stimulus spending. Those other states aren’t using a computer program stolen from New York to analyze spending!

Essentially, because of Governor Martin O’Malley’s failure to spend money efficiently when it is your tax dollars, Maryland’s economy is suffering. Yet, Vice-President Biden touts the success of Maryland, and the main stream media in Maryland didn’t even bother to compare.

I’m going to chalk this up as another failure of State-Stat, and surprise surprise, Governor Martin O’Malley.

Sonny boy? You must be 80 years old to call me that. I’m 55 years old! Doesn’t change the fact that you work at my expense. Every dollar in your pocket is one out of mine. The state does NOTHING that justifies that state of affairs. That’s why you are a parasite. We can see the downward progression of your career: private sector producer… Can’t make the grade… Grocery stockboy… Can’t make the grade… State worker. Reminds me of those liberal t-shirts where the monkey turns into a man, only in reverse.

You’re welcome. You sound like you’ve been with the state for more than 3 years…

I’ll take a raincheck on the beer - Leon’s isn’t on my radar screen, if you know what I mean.

Let’s see if VOR can figure this one out…

Ahhh…good old Voice of Treason. Still “on our side”, huh?

I’d love to see your sorry arse smeared across the highway after an accident, only to tell the medivac crew that comes to your rescue that they’re nothing more than a bunch of “parasites”.

You weren’t on my side when I was a conservative, and you’re still not on my side since I’ve allowed my brain to be consumed with progressive idiocy…er, I mean ideology.

Manchester Bob, let me ask you this, do you think that Medivac is something the private sector can’t handle? How many stories have we heard about private Medical helicopters crashing because of pilot error. Ever think that happened because public employees were once again inferior. It’s clear you are conservative when you feel like it. You are no better than those RINOs who have no spine. Buckley is rolling in his grave at the thought that folks like you call themselves conservative. A few more like you and we might as well hand the keys over to the Socialists. Let me leave you with this: if it is YOU smeared over the pavement and you are lucky enough to have been rescued by a private bird, what areyou going to do when its a socialized medicine doctor ( and probbly a affirmative action case with a degree from the Caribbean) who has to put you together. Still going to defend the state workers of the world. Not me. I’d rather be healthy and in one piece.

Heh-heh, Leon’s hmmm. I think I’ll steer clear myself, if you know what I mean.

Seems State Worker might be one of those don’t ask don’t tell living off the government kinds of Conservatives.

Have fun in that Log Cabin.

Treason: I think that you’re “probbly” (sic) insane. You’re “reasoning” makes no sense at all. It is not within your control to always be “healthy and in one piece”.

Just because the states overspend, and overreach, doesn’t mean that everything that they do should be totally abolished.

You are just as much an idiot as Indy: everything is at the extreme. Just like Indy, you only see black and white…no grey, no color.

There is no difference between the two of you other than the side of the colorless bridge upon which you stand.

I guess you’re one of the ones that would rather have the feds in control of everything. As for me, I’d rather see the bulk of the power return to the states, as it should be in a federal form of government.

And as for Leon’s, you must be searching in the wrong neighborhood. Try Arbutus, idiot!

Call me insane if it makes you feel better. Just because I see things in terms of right and wrong doesn’t make me extreme. I think the private sector can and should handle 99% of the things government does. Seems you might be the one can’t see shades of gray if you think the federal government has to do everything the states don’t. Your philosophy puts the State in statist.

You call yourself conservative but it appears its all based on personality. Not philosophy. You don’t realize it because you hate their personalities so much, but your approach is the very essence of liberalism.

I know there’s a place called Leons that the **** go to near the state office complex. That and Paul’s know what I mean were all I needed to hear to know to stay away from that scene. If there’s a Leon’s in Arbutus, I know to stay away from there now too.

First, there is a term for no government…it’s called anarchy. We need some limited form of government to keep us out of anarchy, but we’ve evolved much further away from that ideal level.

Second, and I may be wrong about this, but as far as I know, there is no private equivalent to the Medivac helicopter system. If there is, how do they make a profit? What are their insurance costs?

I’m glad that you’re always right. But…if you’re always right, and so are Obama, Pelosi, and Reid, then are you sure that you’re not the liberal?

It’s your Archie Bunker style of communication that gives the right a bad name.

    Sonny Boy,

Let me ask you this….What do you do to contribute to this state? All I see is an angry, cynical boy, who can’t have a debate without resorting to name calling and whining. At least Indy doesn’t resort to name calling(well most of the time :) ) but at least his points are somewhat coherent.

How many ? Gift Cards, did Shelia use?????? and now another developer pops up and says Yea! I gave her bunch too? Hilarious!!!!!!!!!

  15. Voice of Reason

I’ve contributed tax dollars to this state for 40 years. I don’t appreciate folks on the dole whining that they aren’t getting as much money from me as they would like. My point is very coherent, as laid out above. You don’t like name-calling? Poor baby’ talk to your friend who jumped in here just to do exactly that.

Hey Manchester Bob, guess you didn’t do too good in math. I said 99% of government. You’ll have a hard time thinking of somehing besides police that the government should be doing. Even that one is debatable. You seem to thbink YOU are always right. I think the way you approach issues is just like a liberal. It’s all about who you like or hate, not about a principled philosophy. The way you describe your supposed conservative ideal government is relativist (less than we have now) and therefore the very foundation of your approach betrays a core liberal trait. Just because there isn’t a private Medivac service doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be. Suppose you are shot in the city. Who do you want responding: affirmative action flunkies or a private sector-based service whose very livelihood depends on successful completion of their mission.

And you know what will be even more hilarious?

When the jury acquits Dixon. They have a tendency not to let the facts get in the way of their deliberations…

Manchester bob you go from saying I must be one of the ones who want the feds in control of everything to accusing me of being an anarchist. You’re al over the board pulling together incompatible arguments in a desperate attempt to smear the target of your anger. Just like a liberal.

    69743, VOR:

I have been in Leon’s Triple L Restaurant in Arbutus.

    It isn’t what you think.

It is a fine neighborhood. I would suggest you rethink your consideration of it.
