Maryland’s Energy Future Isn’t Looking Good

By Martin Watcher

I highlighted before how Governor Martin O’Malley says one thing, but his actions are in the exact opposite. In the mindset of Monday’s post about renewable energy sources, and the Governor’s continued attempt to force BGE to maintain price caps until after he is re-elected, let’s look at some of Governor O’Malley’s rhetoric.

A Washington Post article where O’Malley spoke to legislators and told them that “lawmakers need to be cognizant of rolling “brownouts” that have been forecast in Maryland within a few years.” Wow… rolling brownouts are a serious thing so we better build some more power plants right?

From the Governor’s proposal for re-regulation, the policy document states, “New Generation in Maryland will help reduce congestion and capacity prices for all Maryland Consumers. The PSC reports that the average household in Maryland is paying over $200 per year in capacity costs.” Reducing electricity bills by $200 a year might actually help O’Malley with that campaign promise to lower electricity costs.

During his speech at the Local Legislator Summer Camp known as MACo, the Carroll County Times stated that he told them “the complexity of the state’s current challenge requires pursuing a number of different paths including partnering with local governments to create “peaking plants” that can feed the power grid when electricity demand is at its highest, working toward large-scale commercial renewable energy projects and providing energy assistance to low-income households.”

Governor Martin O’Malley has had only one failure in pushing legislation through the legislature and that is when it comes to re-regulating the energy market. He was able to push through energy reforms that increased cost, he was able to push tax reforms that increased taxes, and he’s been able to make it virtually impossible to use the Death Penalty in Maryland, but he can’t get a bill through to partially re-regulate the energy market.

But through words, O’Malley has made it clear that we need more energy generation in Maryland because we are facing rolling brown outs in our future if we do not. However, his actions are quite contrary to his concern.

For instance, his global warming legislation has made it nearly impossible for a coal or even natural gas plan to be built in Maryland. Despite the fact that currently 60% of Maryland energy comes from coal, it is one of the cheapest forms of energy, and Maryland has hundreds of millions of tons of coal in the Appalachian Mountains that aren’t being used available, Coal is off limits. Natural gas, another cheap form of energy production, has also been deemed unacceptable by the Public Service Commission.

Another area where Governor Martin O’Malley is stifling new energy production is by repealing the property tax exemption for electricity generation in Maryland. A huge tax incentive that allowed Maryland to compete with other states in luring energy production, including his coveted RENEWABLE energy sources, is now gone because he doesn’t know how to manage a budget.

And then there is the stopping of the EDF/Constellation merger which would give the new company the necessary resources to build a nuclear reactor at Calvert Cliffs that will be used just to MAINTAIN the current energy supply since one reactor is reaching the end of its life.

Governor Martin O’Malley, a man so unconcerned with your energy bills or the environment that he increased taxes on renewable energy production, is not living up to the reality in action as someone standing up for ratepayers, the environment, or your family.

Attention all would-be Admirals: nautical lingo has ships moored with “lines” not “ropes.” I believe that most recruits are acquainted with that fact in Boot Camp and/or plebe year at the Academy.

    Turn up the thermostat,

Among them, the PSC orders the company to pay out $110.5 million in rate credits to BGE customers. That will provide about a $100 credit for each BGE residential customer. The PSC also ordered that credit to be implemented before the end of March 2010, to help offset this winter’s heating bills.

I remember when I was in the Navy we used to park our airplane boats up next to the giant dock. All of us boat workers would jump down and tie the boat to one of those big metal drums with a granny knot. Inevitably one of us would be late because we made sure we went to the bathroom first. While we were on the ground, the boat driver would remain behind. Usually on the bed in his room.

…Good times in that Navy. Eventually I was promoted to Super Admiral shortly before I retired (at age 30).

Well, in the last few days that I’ve been gone, I drank the Kool-aid. I am now fully supportive of our beloved Governor, rockin’ Martin O’Malley.

However, to continue receiving my support, he must do two things to prove himself faithful to the progressive agenda which he, and the president that he did not endorse in the primaries, worship.

    1) Many Marylanders that do not get their energy from BGE are poor. The $100 “rebate” potentially designated for each BGE residential customer should be redistributed such that those that get their energy from other providers receive thier fare share of relief.

    2) Martin O’Malley should ensure that Maryland assumes some of the debt from states that have bond ratings lower than AAA. It is only fair to equally distribute the debt, especially by taking on the debt from other progressive states like California, so that all states can be equal when it comes to their bond ratings.

    MB,

I view that $100 “rebate” to be something like the Cash 4 Clunkers program.

A blip on the financial radar screen that helps but a few - temporarily.

    Then it is gone.

    #69415
  15. Manchester Bob

Daniel: Then, we’ll replace it with this:

Martin O’Malley (and his progressive ilk) should outsource all state jobs, which are capable of being outsourced, to states with higher unemployment rates until the rates are equal.

But why stop there? Once we’ve achieved balance in the country, we’ll start doing this on a global scale.

Peggy Noonan is a hack. She is one of the cult of personality that believes Ronald Reagan was a saint. The president who subverted the constitution by selling missiles to Iran to fund his right wing terrorists in Nicaragua. We still have the $2.5 trillion that Reagan added to the national debt and we have yet to pay it off (for all those so called fiscal conservatives).

I see this every day when I’m out and about.
Mom’s, who use to shop during the day while their kids were in school, are now working, waiting tables, at Bob Evans.
    Grocery stores are empty.
Shelves are never full like they once were.
Heck, even the highways I drive during the day look like a ghost town.
I don’t like what I am seeing out there.

You can count the people walking along Harbor Place on a sunny day.
    I went to Rusty Scupper’s for lunch….empty.
Years ago one had to stand in line just to get a seat at the bar.

No matter how our politicians try to put lipstick on this pig, it’s still a pig.

Please explain how my post was nasty to you - I can’t understand any of my post being nasty.

I have no problem with you or Noonan having an opinion. I like to see people express how they feel. I find suspect people like Noonan who feel the need to project their feelings to a larger population by claiming they know how “Americans” feel or that they know that our leaders don’t even notice.

There is a difference between a politician who is elected by a constituency speaking for a larger group and a op/ed columnist speaking for a larger constituency. As much as it seems to pain alot of people here. President Obama speaks for America, not Peggy Noonan.

I respectfully don’t share your observations about the supermarket being a ghost town or there being less traffic on the roads. We just went to the supermarket for groceries and some last minute pumpkins. One supermarket was out of pumpkins, boths had as many cars in the parking lot as ever.

My commute to work is as busy as ever - the traffic picked back up at the end of summer and I have not noticed liger traffic, if anything the commute is worse due to the resurfacing of the roads I use.

I will admit that I have been more circumspect abut purchases since there is a distinct possibility that I could be layed off. But, when we are in the middle of the worst financial crisis since the great depression, I should probably be even more careful than I am being.

Mother Hubbard is posting a link about city crime by the clueless bleeding heart liberal Dan Rodricks because I want you all to know he IS the problem, not the solution. If he wanted to help these kids, he should report on all the programs that will make a difference in a kids life. There are no excuses anymore. Programs are plentiful. Good and caring people are out there dying to help.

You see, my kid works with 25 very poor city kids every week. He teaches them music. The program is free. All it takes is one concerned parent who love their kids more than they love their laziness.
But to read this article, one thinks people like me and my family does not care.

I’m not talking about general disagreements, I’m specifically talking about political views. Children inherit political views/partisan affiliations a stunning (and statistically significant) amount of the time. My point was that your children most likely hold political views that are very close to your own. Can you honestly say that any of your kids disagree with you on political issues more often then they agree ?
