The 3rd to Last Real ID Story I Will Ever Do

By Martin Watcher

Now Governor Martin O’Malley came out last year and said that Maryland would enforce Real ID. He originally said he was going to do a two tiered drivers license, one for illegal immigrants and then one for everybody else. This plan was criticized by Republicans and immigrant advocates for opposite reasons, as the immigrant community felt it would be a “scarlet letter” identifying those who broke the law to come here illegally. After the growing public resentment on the issue, O’Malley backtracked and three days after the initial report came out that he was going to go the two tier route, he said Maryland would comply with the legal presence requirement for drivers.

I know you all have heard tons of stuff about legal presence, Real ID, and driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants. So much so that you’re probably sick of it like I am to a certain degree. The Republican Caucus came out and said that their top three goals were (1) Reduce the size of the State budget, (2) Bar illegal immigrants form getting drivers licenses and (3) Keep the Death Penalty in Maryland as a form of punishment. (Notice how the Baltimore Sun uses the double negative of “Oppose the Repeal…” Darn Republicans are standing in the way of progress)

So it should be an easy fix since O’Malley is on board right. Well let’s just take a look at O’Malley’s Administration bill to stop illegal immigrants from getting drivers licenses. It’s a proposal that has to be approved by the legislature either through the whole body or through the Administrative, Executive and Legislative Review Committee. So the text of the bill….

… wait, O’Malley didn’t introduce any legislation about Real ID and preventing illegal immigrants from getting drivers licenses. His legislative shop had a whole year to prepare it since he decided in January of 2008. He didn’t introduce it last year because he said they were waiting till 2010, well, this is the last session before 2010 and the last chance O’Malley had to make the change and he introduce the change. I’m sure he’ll be there testifying in favor of the House Republican Caucus’ bill tomorrow afternoon.

Congrats Martin Watcher. We won!!!!! Your story yesterday got a yell out from http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/news/local/politics/

    WE WON!!!!!!! (i think)

“In a stand sure to spark controversy, Gov. O’Malley said today that he supports legislation requiring people to prove they are in the country legally before they can get a Maryland driver’s license, the AP reports. Maryland is one of just a few states in the nation and the only one in the East that does not presently require proof of legal residence, a fact that upsets a great many people. (The other side of the issue says illegal immigrants will drive anyway, so we might as well make sure they know what they’re doing, have insurance etc.)

One can only assume the governor is responding to O’Malleywatch’s post on the subject from yesterday.”

  3. . Martin O’Malley says he supports legislation requiring people to demonstrate they are in the country legally before receiving a driver’s license.

O’Malley pointed out today that Maryland is the only state on this side of the Rocky Mountains that does not currently require a person to have legal status to obtain a state driver’s license.

Maryland is one of four states where undocumented immigrants can get a driver’s license.

O’Malley says he is very aware that lawful presence is something that every state is going to be required to have, and this is the last legislative session for lawmakers to approve a measure to achieve required benchmarks.

Lawmakers are holding hearings on the legislation this afternoon.

Now onto InState tuition for ILLEGALS.

I’m curious as to why the state insists on giving in-state tuition rates to people who might have committed hate crimes. Or why people who may not have paid their taxes correctly are allowed to attend our colleges and universities as though they are somehow law-abiding citizens like the rest of us. Or why those who have made illegal modifications to their homes in violation of the zoning codes don’t have to pay out of state tuition. Seems like the legislature needs to crack down on quite a few groups of people who are potentially violating the law.

aj - you need to look around at the real world. Health care for kids? they just keep upping the amount of money going into it and upping ages of kids, but they don’t get on the millions of parents who don’t have enough interest in their kids to enroll them in the existing programs. The figures for Maryland came out on this site long ago - like thousands just in Md, that are eligible but not enrolled - Fix that first - make these policies work before pouring more money into them. We all know you hate the war, and the military and God, so we know your stand on all that, but no one has attacked us, yet, have they? Would it take another 9/11 to wake you up? The bad guys are still out there trying to chop off your heads. And where is obama going? As well he should. Go where our enemies are the strongest.

As far as the education issue, you can’t put a kid into Harvard if he/she can’t read. The problem is right now with the lower schools, not higher education, but obama wants to focus on college. Of course omalley is taking over the care of the K thru 12, so we know that will soon be tanking too. Throw more money at that too, that will fix it - NOT.

What I am saying is, we cannot afford all these liberal programs, that never work, right now. Lets wait til the federal budget is balanced by the liberals, and our Grandchildren won’t have to give up 75% of their salary to pay for our mistakes. But lets not cut defense spending or our Grandchildren won’t be around to pay thru the nose.

There is another spending bill floating around our “legisleaders” with like 8000 earmarks. That has nothing to do with “stimulus”. The democrats are going berserk, spending.

Just a few comments and maybe some metaphors:

-is Stupid O’Malley cutting a deal with the Senate to throw the Illegal Drivers License issue “under the bus” to get the votes for his repeal of the death penalty?
-BHO said he inherited problems, but he fails to connect the dots that Bill Clinton had the chance to wipe out the Al Qaeda leadership on the tarmack as the Saudi government offered Bin Laden to the USA. Could that lack of action by Clinton prevented 9/11?

BHO fails to recognize that under the Clinton Administration, CRA and “affordable” housing got out of control. CRA, as a policy could have worked, but Federal Bank Regulators threatened Banks with Charter loss if they did not lower there Standards. Sort of a “pay to play”, hence Freddie and Fannie bought this bad paper and sold it to Investers. The rest is history, ACORN

-BHO states he will cut the Federal Deficit in half by 2012, SURE! it will happen two ways, the new “stimulus” money that will be mandated will become part of every States new higher taxes and the Federal deficit will rise each year. $2trillion, $4trillion,$8trillion then in 2012 it will be $4trillion.

-Did anyone notice that after BHO signed the “stimulus bill” Hillary was in China beggin them to buy more of our debt, BUT WAIT, are they going to buy another tillion dollars? maybe NOT so immediately BHO has to talk about fiscal responsibility. HUMMMMM, OK let’s talk to OPEC, let’s promise them they can manipulate the free market of oil to $75/80 per barrel so they can lend us the money. Just great!

-Finally for now, it seems BHO just can’t stop campaigning, I write about it because it is NOT “leadership that works” but it is the Democrat DOOMSDAY FEAR policy to drive votes for “change” Sounds like O’Malley the other Progressive bookend and mirror image.

The USA can begin to heel economically once BHO shuts up!

Straw men? how so? It seems to me that the same logic used to keep illegal immigrants from reaping the benefits of in-state tuition would apply to all the categories I listed, and that’s just a start. In fact, if we were to prioritize who should and shouldn’t be getting in-state tuition by how much we think they are a detriment to our society, I think illegal immigrants would be lower on the list than many others who are free to get in-state tuition today but are somehow neglected by the right in their crusade.

I say we start with those convicted of violent crimes. Then we move down to white collar criminals. I think the misdemeanors (most illegal immigration violations fall in this category) would be pretty far down the list. Of course those convicted may be trying to improve their life circumstances. Maybe we could have a waiver process. Man, this seems like a pretty big project… should keep the right busy for years.

“President Barack Obama’s first budget will seek $634 billion over 10 years
as ^^^^^^^a down payment^^^^^^ on health care reform —”
“That includes extending beyond 2010 the $400 annual tax cut in the stimulus plan just signed into law.”

We get $7 a week extra in our pay. The One promises us he will continue such benevolence for years to come. “We will take care of you” he says. $7 a week.
This kind of treatment is exactly how he “organized” communities. He promised them MORE of whatever they wanted or needed. His compatriots formed labor unions and leftists foundations. (SEIU and Tides) Sprung from that groups like ACORN, La Raza, etc. They are now in power. Solis is a radical unionist. All this is being accepted for $7 a week.

What will be next as the carrot? Oh yea, a “right” to occupy a home. (ACORN)
Oh yea, another TRILLION or so for “health care”. Dashole’s plan, from his book.
Too bad he simply forgot to claim certain income on his 1040. WE ALL make that mistake. Right?

I have used Turbo Tax for years and now I hear from the guy who RUNS the IRS that even HE can screw up Turbo Tax. If he is the “best and brightest” and was INDISPENSABLE to this administration, where does that leave little old hs dropout me trying to navigate Turbo Tax? Oh OH!!!

    Remember that women http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P36×8rTb3jI ??????

SHE WAS RIGHT ON wasn’t she? Maybe gas for your car is next somehow some way.

Everything I learned growing up is now turned on its head. ONE month in. Many years gone. I guess I will be still figuring out a way to pay MY OWN mortgage along with my neighbors just so I can keep a roof over my head.
I will have to also pay for an ILLEGAL ALIEN to go to CCBC or some other place.
As well as pay my own sons tuition. I just hope my son does not get bumped out of a class or not find a seat in any class that may hold an illegal alien. That is not the way I learned growing up. I learned that people who play by the rules get ahead. People who work hard get ahead. Save your money. Put it in savings and stocks.
401 K is THE way to go. I did all that. I lost 40% of it. I am helping my neighbor pay his mortgage and he drives a 2008 BMW and has a new play room in the basement. A house down the street just got broken into by some people saying “Its our house now”.

    I needed that.

Has anyone noticed that, with all this spending on the part of BHO and Congress, that no mention is made of the expenditures for our presence in Iraq and Afghanistan???

BHO is now known as the Multi-Trillion Dollar Man.

Who knew the Democrats wanted to be known as incapable of managing budgets?

And they place the blame on us fine upstanding pay-our-bills on-time citizens.
And want us and our future generations to keep on paying for their decisions.

One day, there will be a reckoning.

    Confused in 56:

President Bush increased the national debt by $5 trillion and no the GOP didn’t say boo. As soon as Obama came in, the GOP suddenly stood for fiscal responsibility. Sounds hypocritical to me.

On your point that we have not been attacked since 9/11, what were the anthrax attacks (part of the national “defense” industry used against U.S. citizens)?

    #58727
  26. Daniel

Anything and everything sounds hypocritical to you.

The point is that this current administration is STILL DOING IT and in record time no less.

And just when will you join the bandwagon to tell the politicians to STOP DOING THAT?

    #58728
  27. Me

    Another John: 76

You’re right, the GOP was wrong and they shouldn’t have spent that much money. However that does not absolve Obama and the DEM’s from wrong doing.
Obama is on track to add 2 trillion to the national debt in his first 2 months in office. Also remember that the Dem’s took control of Congress 2 years ago. So they did in fact have the power to stop George Bush but they also did nothing. Your logic would dictate that a rape is justified if the victim has already been raped? Or that it’s ok if no one tried to stop it?

    #58729
  28. Daniel

And to put the cherry on top, all this additional spending is ON TOP of our Iraq and Afghanistan expenditures that are STILL CONTINUING.
